Dear Friends,
Once again support for CCPS (in the County's 2013 budget/2013-2018
budget plan) is being tossed around like a political football and the
best interests of our children have been sidelined.
On Thursday (< 2 weeks before a budget must be approved), the
Commissioners withdrew support for the already balanced budget their
staff had prepared, and proposed to cut support for CCPS operations by
~$3M compared to last year; this is ~$8M less than CCPS requested to
compensate teachers fairly, maintain reasonable class sizes, and begin
to implement State-mandated improvements to K-12 curriculum's. As a
"compromise" the Commissioners said they will consider allocating $3M to
CCPS on a one time basis but there would be no promise that such
money would be available in future years.
Introducing this type of uncertainly into the school budget WILL
NOT increase the ability to pay down debt, provide tax relief, or reduce
spending; it WILL lead to "band aid" solutions, and undermine CCPS'
ability to retain qualified teachers and maintain high quality
educational services.
After 4 years of reductions in staff, frozen salaries, and
austerity measures to increase efficiencies, which together resulted in
substantial savings from already tight annual school budgets, the school
system is scrambling to figure out what more can be cut without further
compromising our children's education.
CCPS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT NOW!!!
Please take a moment to email our Commissioners to remind them that providing adequate ongoing support for CCPS is one of the best uses of taxpayer money, and extremely important to you.
